"We all have mental health, just as we all have physical health. How we feel can vary from good mental wellbeing to difficult feelings and emotions, to severe mental health problems." — mind.org.uk

Looking After You

Wellbeing means different things to different people. It can be about how we feel, how we're handling everyday life, or what we think is possible right now. Having good wellbeing doesn't always mean you don't have a mental health issue.

You might have a mental health problem but still feel good overall. Or you might not have a mental health problem but still be struggling with how you feel.

Wellbeing includes:

  • The challenges you're facing
  • Your thoughts and feelings
  • How you're coping with your responsibilities

Tips for Improving your Wellbeing:

  • Relax and reduce stress: Find activities that help you unwind, such as meditation or reading.
  • Learn and be creative: Engage in hobbies or new skills to stimulate your mind.
  • Spend time in nature: Enjoy the outdoors to boost your mood and energy.
  • Connect with others: Build and maintain relationships to feel supported.
  • Look after your physical health: Exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet.
  • Improve your sleep: Establish a healthy sleep routine to feel more rested.

NHS staff have free access to various wellbeing apps and websites to support their mental health and wellbeing. For further details, kindly refer to the images located on the right side of the page.

Looking After Your Team

If you lead, manage, or organise a team or group in primary care, you can encourage all staff to talk about things or put things in place such as:

  • Ensure a safe working environment: Make sure everyone feels secure and comfortable.
  • Evaluate team dynamics: Reflect on how your team is working together and identify areas for improvement.
  • Enhance team relationships: Foster better connections and communication among team members.
  • Promote a compassionate and collaborative culture: Encourage kindness and teamwork.
  • Set wellbeing goals: Help your team identify and work towards their wellbeing objectives.
  • Provide wellbeing support: Ensure everyone knows where to find help when they need it.
  • Find meaning in work: Encourage staff to bring their whole selves to work and find purpose in their roles.

Tips for Looking After Your Team's Wellbeing

  • Integrate wellbeing checks: Make wellbeing a regular part of team meetings, supervisions, and appraisals. Offer drop-in sessions for staff to talk openly.

  • Conduct wellbeing surveys: Gather feedback through surveys and take action based on the results.

  • Share resources: Provide access to wellbeing resources, workshops, courses, and podcasts.
