In 2024, approximately 30% of GP appointments in the UK were for musculoskeletal (MSK) issues. This includes conditions such as back pain, arthritis, and other joint or muscle problems.

Given the high percentage of GP appointments for musculoskeletal issues, adults in the UK can now directly book appointments with MSK professionals through their GP, eliminating the need for a referral.

First Contact Musculoskeletal Practitioners (FCPs) evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients independently, order diagnostic tests, administer steroid injections, and prescribe medication such as analgesics or anti-inflammatories for MSK conditions as needed. Additionally, FCPs refer patients to other healthcare professionals or services if necessary. By streamlining the process for patients with MSK issues, FCPs ensure timely and effective care without the need to see a GP first, leading to better patient outcomes and more efficient use of healthcare resources.
